Art therapy… when words are not enough!
Most of us have had exposure as young children to play with “play dough” or other modeling clays. Because of early play experience with clay, clay work is often more welcoming and less intimidating than other creative endeavors. That success and joy we felt as children rolling out long snakes or making balls and bricks can be harnessed through clay work at all points in our lives. The potential of clay as a medium to enhance therapeutic relationships and advance the therapeutic process is well established. Beyond clay therapy, clay work can promote wellness by supporting a creative process that is relaxing and centering. Say it with Clay offers a unique combination of opportunities for therapeutic and recreational clay work.
The tactile and mental aspects of the creation process along with the enduring and often functional product that is created makes clay a unique art medium. Clay allows for the integration of emotions in both the creative process and the finished product.
Success, Confidence, and Pride: The non-threatening medium of clay builds a sense of self-worth and confidence that comes through the successful completion of a finished product. Say it with Clay therapeutic staff selects appropriate projects that allow clients to trust in themselves and encourage taking risks with the clay. People who would never consider themselves “artists” are able to shape clay into a finished piece that is both beautiful and represents successful risk taking. The finished product, in particular functional products such as mugs or plates for daily use, fosters confidence and pride. It serves as a reminder of a successful and pleasant therapeutic experience.
